ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
Marina Chiavari manages the Port paying a special attention to the issues of environment and sustainability, putting into practice every time it’s possible behaviours, practices and services that can reduce the environmental impact of the facility and improve the sensibility and attention both of our guests and Chiavari’s residents.
This is an ever-developing policy, that sees Marina Chiavari always ready to innovate and improve its environmental performance.
BLUE FLAG
Il Porto di Chiavari è Bandiera Blu europea ininterrottamente dal 1987.
Since 1987, the port of Chiavari has been awarded the European Blue Flag every year.
The Blue Flag is the environmental award that is assigned every year to the ports which implement a good management supplying quality services while respecting the environment and which guarantee environmental information to their clients.
The Blue Flag is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), an international no profit non-governmental organization present in more than thirty countries.
The requirements to obtain the Blue Flag relate to quality of the landing, safety conditions, management’s ability in performing environmental information and education activities.
Yachtspersons too can hoist a Blue Flag on their crafts if they subscribe to the following Behaviour Code:
BEHAVIOUR CODE
I, the undersigned, aware that the sea has always been a source of civilization, well being and environmental balance, commit myself to:
- Not throwing garbage in the sea or along the coast
- Not emptying the bilge waters into the sea, the shores, or in sensitive areas
- Not dumping into the sea toxic or dangerous waste (used oils, flat batteries, paints, solvents, cleansers, etc.)
- Cooperating in the promotion of separate garbage collection
- Using environmental-friendly products to maintain the craft
- Immediately reporting to the authorities in charge every event that may cause ecological accidents
- Not using forbidden fishing techniques
- Respecting vulnerable and natural protected areas
- Protecting and respecting sea animals and plants
- Avoiding damages to the sea bed, especially in presence of posidonia prairies and submarine archaeological sites
- Not buying or using objects derived from protected species
- Promoting environmental sensitivity among sailors
- Reducing as much as possible the use of water, electricity, and fuel
- Acting so as not to waste fuel during bunkering

ECOLOGICAL PRECINCT
Chiavari Tourist Port provided its area with a modern and efficient Ecological Precinct, where the port’s guests can make separate collection of especially polluting waste such as used oils, flat batteries, filters.
BILGE WATERS EXTRACTOR STATION
A station for the extraction of bilge waters has been established at the port of Chiavari to preserve the quality of the sea, and not only around the port area. The station is at disposal of all sailors and permits the treating of these sewage without dispersing them into the sea.
For the same reason, the Managing Code foresees that both Marina Chiavari in its port maintenance activities, and the sailors use whenever possible soft products, solvents and cleansers.
PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR PANELS
Photovoltaic panels for the production of electricity have been installed along the dock, in the part taking to the offices building.
The energy produced by the panels can satisfy a great part of the ports’ facilities energy requirements.
ELECTRIC CARS, BICYCLES
The port’s staff uses electric cars and bicycles to move around the port and in Chiavari without pollution.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Marina Chiavari and Navimeteo cooperate with the schools of Chiavari and of the Tigullio area to promote the knowledge of the sea, its characteristics and its defence.
